The Word “Eternal” & the Punishment of the Wicked
A letter by John Frederick Denison Maurice (1805-72) to the Principle of King's College defending his use of the word “Eternal” in lectures & a collection of essays. Second edition, 1854.

“...In each case I have thought and spoken of that love as only removing punishment by removing sin; I have desired, and hope always to desire, for myself and for all men, that we may never cease to be punished by God till we cease to punish ourselves by rebelling against Him.”

... “The publication in 1853 of his Theological Essays, in which he dealt with the difficulties which hinder the acceptance of faith in Christ, lost him the professorship of theology in King's College”....
